Oklahoma State In the near 100 year existence of the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, two Oklahoma Wardens have given the ultimate sacrifice, losing their lives in the line of duty. Charles W. Estes and Melvin “Bucky” Garrison both lost their lives while enforcing the wildlife laws of Oklahoma. The Oklahoma State Game Warden Association has worked hard to make sure the lives and careers of these two men are not forgotten. Permanent memorials in honor of both men have been dedicated in Tulsa and Wagoner. Their stories have been published in the Oklahoma State Game Warden magazine in the fall of 2001 issue and issue 2 in 2005. The Oklahoma Game Wardens who have been killed on duty are now memorialized with permanent plaques at two locations in the counties the wardens were working when they were killed. Wardens Charles W. Estes (1870-1911) and Melvin "Bucky" Garrison (1946-1971) gave the ultimate sacrifice while protecting Oklahoma's wildlife resources. Click for more information. Both Wardens had only been working a short time when they were lost, but both men were known for their dedication to the career both had chosen. Both gave the ultimate sacrifice protecting the wildlife resources of Oklahoma and it is our duty and honor to remember them.
